It’s been five years since Summer Marks was brutally murdered in the woods.

Everyone thinks Mia and Brynn killed their best friend. That driven by their obsession with a novel called The Way into Lovelorn the three girls had imagined themselves into the magical world where their fantasies became twisted, even deadly.

The only thing is: they didn’t do it.

On the anniversary of Summer’s death, a seemingly insignificant discovery resurrects the mystery and pulls Mia and Brynn back together once again. But as the lines begin to blur between past and present and fiction and reality, the girls must confront what really happened in the woods all those years ago—no matter how monstrous.

Wow. This wasn’t what I expected to be, and in a good way. BROKEN THINGS was filled with a lot suspense and turned out more intense than I thought it would be. The beginning was a slow start for me, but it did not take me long to pull me into girl’s life’s. I loved how the story went between past and present for each of the girl, it gave a reader a better glimpse of each character in my opinion. BROKEN THINGS was a fictional story, and while reading it, felt as it became a real story. For me, it was easy to imagine what both Mia and Brynn were feeling, their emotions were so descriptive, it gave me a feel of their emotions. I loved both of characters, but I loved Mia, out of all she was my favorite. I was hoping that her and Owen would get together. I feel as both had feelings for one another, but Owen seemed to try and put his feelings for her aside, and I could tell that despite what he told her, he still loved her. I seen the way he acted when the two of them were together. I was hoping that the two of them would find their happily after.

Besides Mia, I also liked Abby and Owen quite bit. Sometimes I wondered what was on their minds all this time. Of course, like everyone I had wondered who killed Summer. Mia, Brynn and Owen did not seem like killers’ type to me, and if it wasn’t them, then who was it? BROKEN THINGS was mysterious and the type of books that I love. Every page, had me wondering what is going to happen next, and had me curious about who the killer was. Like everyone else, I wanted to know the truth about Summer’s death. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Summer, there were times that I liked her then other times I couldn’t believe what she did. I did not like how she treated Brynn, I felt as if she played with her emotions. I did wonder if she actually liked her and just did not want accept what she was, or if she was only toying with Brynn’s emotions. I wonder if that was the reason that she pulled away with Abby after she kissed her, if she were afraid to get hurt again. As I said, this story always had something going on, and there were always something going on, which making you wonder what is going to happen next.

I loved the fantasy aspects in this book, making book more fascinating. I enjoyed the bits and pieces the book it had, from book that girls were obsessed with The Way Into Lovelorn and the fanfic that the girls wrote afterward Return To Lovelorn . I did not expect to killer who it was, to me it was as shock to me as it was to everyone else. At least now the girls can be free now, and not be accused to be murders. I get it why they assumed that they killed her, but at the same time they did not have any actual proof. If you enjoy mystery with mix of fantasy, you should pick up copy of BROKEN THINGS now. This was the first book that I read by LAUREN OLIVER and I cannot wait to explore the rest of her books. A beautifully written Young Adult thriller that will have you craving for more.
