Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia's family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess--a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.
For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She's endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.
Then, one night, the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, she realizes that surviving is no longer enough. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. And power isn't always won on the battlefield.
For ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. That all ends here.

I saw mixed reviews about this book, but it was just the type of story that I enjoy. I gave it a chance. ASH PRINCESS is the book you end up falling in love with. It did start out a bit slow for me, and once it picked up, that is when I found myself in trouble. ASH PRINCESS is just the type of stories that I love, and I found myself reading it late into the night. I was fascinated by Theo’s story, and I found myself hoping that she would be able to escape it. I cannot begin to imagine, to have to go through what Theo did, all that cruelty and abuse. However, to me Theo was brave, to have seen her mother get murdered and then have to deal with Kaiser for so many years. To me, that’s courage. I was scared for her, when he asked her to kill. I can’t imagine what must been going through her, and how she knew that she didn’t have any other choice. My heart broke for her. From the entire book, I didn’t have any character as much as I hated Kaiser. How could you not hate him? Especially how he always seemed to punish Theodosia anytime that something went wrong, or that he did not like, even if it couldn’t possibly be her fault. To Kaiser that didn’t matter.
It’s easy to tell, that Theodosia was conflicted between her childhood friend, Blaise and Prinz Soren from the start. I do believe that she didn’t expect to fall for the Prinz, she was supposed have him fall in love with her, but not to develop feelings for him. I am not surprised that she did, he is nothing like his father, and he always tried to look out for her. Prinz Soren is the type of guy that every girl dreams about. Of course Blaise always seemed to look out for her as well. In a way I am conflicted myself, because I like both Prinz and Blaise. I am curious now though; I cannot help but wonder who she will end up with. I can’t wait to read next book in the series, LADY SMOKE and find out. With an ending like that, you can’t help but wonder what will happen. What will happen with Theodosia, Cress, Prinz, and Blaise. I was blown away by the story; I couldn’t get enough of it. It’s hard to believe that ASH PRINCESS was her debut novel, it was…delightful. How did I not read it sooner?
I am sure that ASH PRINCESS will become a series that I will recommend to my friend, that I will re-read in the future. It was beautifully written, and so vivid, and I felt as I was actually there, along with Theo. Despite being a fantasy book, to me, it felt so real. Every time I had put the book down, I thought about it, and wondered what would happen next. Once I reached the end, I couldn’t wait to pick up the next book in the series. ASH PRINCESS was the first book that I read by LAURA SEBASTIAN and now that I have, I cannot to check out rest of her books, rest of the series. Most of all I am curious what will happen between Theo and Cress, considering how it ended between the two of them, and I have feeling that it will be war between two of them. I cannot imagine turning from friends to enemies, but I can’t say I blame Cress for being angry, considering what Theo had done. I have a feeling that Cress might become dangerous, if she hasn’t already. The story, the characters wasn’t only what I liked about this book. Look at the cover, isn’t it stunning? That was actually one of first things that caught my attention and had me curious about the book. Even if you don’t know what book is about, the cover and the title will have you curious enough to check out.
Highly recommend this book.
