A magic passed down through generations . . .

Georgina Fernweh waits with growing impatience for the tingle of magic in her fingers—magic that has been passed down through every woman in her family. Her twin sister, Mary, already shows an ability to defy gravity. But with their eighteenth birthday looming at the end of this summer, Georgina fears her gift will never come.

An island where strange things happen . . .

No one on the island of By-the-Sea would ever call the Fernwehs what they really are, but if you need the odd bit of help—say, a sleeping aid concocted by moonlight—they are the ones to ask.

No one questions the weather, as moody and erratic as a summer storm.

No one questions the (allegedly) three-hundred-year-old bird who comes to roost on the island every year.

A summer that will become legend . . .

When tragedy strikes, what made the Fernweh women special suddenly casts them in suspicion. Over the course of her last summer on the island—a summer of storms, of love, of salt—Georgina will learn the truth about magic, in all its many forms.

Emotional, Astonishing, Magical.

When I picked up SUMMER OF SALT , I wasn’t sure what to expect. I only read one book by KATRINA LENO and that was years ago. What caught my attention was the cover, the title and the summary of the book, which sounded something that I would enjoy. After only reading couple pages, I knew that I was going to love this story. I did. I fell in love with this story, and I am not sure if I can even explain in words how much I loved it. SUMMER OF SALT is a type of story that you cannot help but fall in love with, and the book that will have you going through the emotions from start to end. I finished it last night and I am still thinking about the story. I love magical realism books, and I have read few through the years. I think that SUMMER OF SALT was one of the best magical realism books that I have read. I loved the fact that magic was mentioned in the book right from the start. From beginning, I couldn’t help but wonder what Georgina’s gift would be, and there was a part of me that wondered if it would come. I never imagined what her gift would be, but then how could I? It is a unique gift. Then that is not the only twist in the book, and that was what will keep you on reading.

Like Georgina, I had a feeling that something was off about Mary, after Annabella’s death. At first, I assume that she was just shocked about the way she was killed. As time passed, she started acting weirder, and didn’t seem like she was herself. I started to wonder if maybe she knew something about her death. I knew that she was hiding something. I also was aware that what she was hiding, couldn’t be anything good. I enjoyed that the story had a bit of mystery to it, and I wonder what Georgina would end up discovering about her sister. I never even guessed of what could happened to her that night. I cannot imagine how terrified she must be. I understand why she didn’t tell her sister, she was scared. I would be to. Once the truth was uncovered, I was in shock, considering who had hurt her. I should have seen it, how he always followed her, gave her gifts. That’s not an excuse to do what he done to her. As I said, SUMMER OF SALT ending was filled with twists that messed with your emotions, and made you wish that It wasn’t the ending. I wanted to hug Mary, to hold her. I wanted to cry along with her, my heart broke for her.

SUMMER OF SALT was a beautifully written book. Every single page. To me, it almost felt like a poetry, the one that you couldn’t pull yourself from. I feel as if this is a book that everyone should check out. It will have you wishing that you picked this book up sooner. A book that deserves a lot more than five stars. After reading it, I cannot wait to check rest of KATRINA LENO books. A story that will hook you from the start until the end.
