Emma Saylor doesn’t remember a lot about her mother, who died when she was ten. But she does remember the stories her mom told her about the big lake that went on forever, with cold, clear water and mossy trees at the edges.

Now it’s just Emma and her dad, and life is good, if a little predictable…until Emma is unexpectedly sent to spend the summer with her mother’s family—her grandmother and cousins she hasn’t seen since she was a little girl.

When Emma arrives at North Lake, she realizes there are actually two very different communities there. Her mother grew up in working class North Lake, while her dad spent summers in the wealthier Lake North resort. The more time Emma spends there, the more it starts to feel like she is divided into two people as well. To her father, she is Emma. But to her new family, she is Saylor, the name her mother always called her.

Then there’s Roo, the boy who was her very best friend when she was little. Roo holds the key to her family’s history, and slowly, he helps her put the pieces together about her past. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of North Lake—and Saylor finds herself falling under Roo’s spell as well.

For Saylor, it’s like a whole new world is opening up to her. But when it’s time to go back home, which side of her will win out?

My emotions…

SARAH DESSEN did it again. She created a story for you to fall in love with again. I am not sure if I could even put it into right words about how much I loved this story. I have been reading SARAH DESSEN since 2012, and there has not been a single book of hers that I did not enjoy. I always looked forward to her books. When I found out about THE REST OF THE STORY , I could not wait to check it. My only regret is the fact that I did not read it sooner. Reading THE REST OF THE STORY reminded me of how much I love this author, how much I enjoy the stories. I feel as if her books are stories that anyone could relate to, THE REST OF THE STORY wasn’t any different. It felt real to me. I even found myself thinking about it long after I finished it. There were few times I had to force myself to put the book down because had classes in the morning. If it weren’t for school, I would read it faster than I had.

I loved Emma Saylor and thought it was unique that she had two names. I did wonder which name she would end up choosing. Emma Saylor is a type of person that I would love to be friends with. I loved the bond that she created with her grandmother and her cousins in such a short time, considering that she haven’t seen them since she was little. I hope that it would be a bond that will stay with years to come. I liked Emma Saylor’s dad, but at same time, I did not like how he reacted when she said that she wanted to stay with them. I do understand why he was upset, but he could handle that better. I did not like how he treated Roo when she was discovered Emma Saylor drunk, how he assumed that he was the reason. I was glad for Emma Saylor and her father to work out the issues between the two of them in the end. I always enjoyed stories about families and THE REST OF THE STORY was one of my favorites.

THE REST OF THE STORY is another book that will play with your emotions; at least it did with mine. Not only did I fall in love with characters and the story, but made me feel inspired. Once I read it, I went to work on the book I been writing. It’s not the first time it happened with SARAH DESSEN book and I am sure that it won’t be the last. If you love young adult novels, I would highly recommend this one. A beautifully written story about family, friendship and love.
