Some sixteen-year-olds babysit for extra cash. Some work at the Gap. Becca Williamson breaks up couples.
After watching her sister get left at the altar, Becca knows the true damage that comes when people utter the dreaded L-word. For just $100 via paypal, she can trick and manipulate any couple into smithereens. With relationship zombies overrunning her school, and treating single girls like second class citizens, business is unfortunately booming. Even her best friend Val has resorted to outright lies to snag a boyfriend.
One night, she receives a mysterious offer to break up the homecoming king and queen, the one zombie couple to rule them all: Steve and Huxley. They are a JFK and Jackie O in training, masters of sweeping faux-mantic gestures, but if Becca can split them up, then school will be safe again for singletons. To succeed, she'll have to plan her most elaborate scheme to date and wiggle her way back into her former BFF Huxley’s life – not to mention start a few rumors, sabotage some cell phones, break into a car, and fend off the inappropriate feelings she’s having about Val’s new boyfriend. All while avoiding a past victim out to expose her true identity.
No one said being the Break-Up Artist was easy.
When I saw the title : The Break Up Artist it caught my interest in an instant, I was curious. A girl who breaks up couples for money? That’s original right there, unlike any other love stories out there. No Love Triangles, No best friends falling in love. Instead of couples falling in love, she was breaking them up. How can you not love a story like that? How can that not capture anyone’s attention. That’s what I loved about it. It was different. It was filled with suspense, drama and a quite bit of humor added to it. Not only did I love the title but the cover too, it was different too from usual covers out there, it looked like a drawing, a hand drawing. Cover and title went well with each other, love how colorful it was. I adored this book. An exceptional debut.
Becca : At beginning I wasn’t sure how to feel about her. I knew that what she was doing is wrong, it’s one thing to break up couples but for money too? I felt like that wasn’t a right thing to do. How could it? At same time I understand that when she was doing, she thought that she was helping others. I guess when book progressed, I felt as she did, at least for some couples. When Becca was exposed as Break Up Artist, those couples knew it was set up, and if they were right for each other, Like Steve and Huxley, they would got back together. In a way she did help some. I knew that it wouldn’t end well for her, especially when others started wondering who break up artist was. Things like those never end well. I got say, she came up with creative and interesting plans.
Huxley, Val & Ezra : I liked each of these characters in their own way, but my favorite was Huxley. Despite fact that she ditched Becca when she started dating Steve, she changed. I knew that Becca was pretending in start but Huxley wasn’t, she tried to help her. She trusted her. I felt bad for both of them, when Becca was exposed, just when their friendship went back on track. I am curious if Huxley ever figure out, if it was Becca who set everything up, to get Huxley and Steve back together, if she find it in her heart, to forgive her. I knew by end that Becca grew to care for her again. Now Val, to me it felt like she cared about Ezra more than she cared about the friendship, but at least she tried get their friendship back on track. It still no excuse to what her and Ezra did. Ezra was most suprising, he seemed so sweet, but there were hints, he seemed to go from Val to Becca pretty fast. It got me suspicious. Nobody falls in love that fast. I was glad that Becca got for Val to see that at the end, despite how hurt Val was.
The ending seemed to have a bit cliffhanger, at least that how it seemed to me. It made me curious, is there going be a sequel? I am curious to see what happens after everything got revealed. If you in need of something original, The Break Up Artist is that book. An entertaining ride.
