From the New York Times bestselling author of Flight Patterns comes a stunning new novel about a young single mother who discovers that the nature of friendship is never what it seems....

Recently divorced, Merilee Talbot Dunlap moves with her two children to the Atlanta suburb of Sweet Apple, Georgia. It s not her first time starting over, but her efforts at a new beginning aren't helped by an anonymous local blog that dishes about the scandalous events that caused her marriage to fail.

Merilee finds some measure of peace in the cottage she is renting from town matriarch Sugar Prescott. Though stubborn and irascible, Sugar sees something of herself in Merilee something that allows her to open up about her own colorful past.

Sugar's stories give Merilee a different perspective on the town and its wealthy school moms in their tennis whites and shiny SUVs, and even on her new friendship with Heather Blackford. Merilee is charmed by the glamorous young mother's seemingly perfect life and finds herself drawn into Heather's world.

In a town like Sweet Apple, where sins and secrets are as likely to be found behind the walls of gated mansions as in the dark woods surrounding Merilee's house, appearance is everything. But just how dangerous that deception can be will shock all three women....

Beautifully written. Astonishing story about love, family, true meaning of friendship and new beginnings.

I have been a fan of KAREN WHITE since I started reading her books few years ago. Through years of reading her books, she had became one of my favorite authors, I am always looking forward to her new books. From the books that I have read, there hasn’t been a single one that I didn’t enjoy. THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT wasn’t any different, like her other books I was in love after reading few sentences. I was already thrown in both Merilee and Sugar’s world. I couldn’t get enough of their stories, and I loved Sugar’s stories that she ended up telling Merilee. It did not take me long to see that Merilee and Sugar would end up becoming important to one another. The ending showed how important the two of them became to one another. Not only did she become an important person in Merilee’s life but in her children’s too. It’s impossible to not love Sugar and Merilee, but if I had to pick a favorite character, I believe that Sugar would be my favorite. She had gone through a lot in her lifetime, and she kept on going. If it anybody else in her situation they might give up, but she didn’t. That is one of things that I love about her, besides her name. Her loyalty to her friends and to her family.

I had a feeling that there was something off about Heather. Do you ever get this feeling about a character that there is something off about them, but can’t quite figure out what it is? That was a feeling that I had about Heather. Plus she seemed too chipper, I don’t think that anybody could be happy like she been. Despite my feelings I never imagined that Heather could be a girl that Merilee was cruel to all those years ago, nor did I think that she would hold grudge against after so long. Killing her own husband to get revenge on someone, I think that she might gone too far. Poor Dan. I liked him. Why does it seem like the good ones seem to get a sad ending? I felt so bad him, and not only did she kill him, she tried to frame Merilee for it, considering of her past. I am just glad she had people by her side who believed her about Dan. I think Heather might lost it, and might had some other issues.

KAREN WHITE has a way with southern stories, I love it. It seems anytime that I read her books, I fall in love with her stories more. Afterwards, I think about story more. There hasn’t been a single of her books where I did not get attached to the characters. THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT has become one of my favorites and I know that it will be a story that I will never forget. It was magical. I am eager to see what adventure she will come up with in her next book.
