Breezy remembers leaving the party: the warm, wet grass under her feet, her cheek still stinging from a slap to her face. But when she wakes up, scared and pulling dirt from her mouth, a year has passed and she can’t explain how.

Nor can she explain the man lying at her grave, dead from her touch, or why her heartbeat comes and goes. She doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past.

Haunted by happy memories from her life, Breezy sets out to find answers in the gritty, threatening world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight, and a sinister cult is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she discovers is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.

That was unexpected, not what I imagined it to be when I picked up the novel. There is so much to say about this novel, and right not my emotions are everywhere. If you love horror and want, a book that will grab your attention, SHALLOW GRAVES is that book. I came across SHALLOW GRAVES while I was at the library, getting some books and at the time I wasn’t aware that it was a debut novel. I feel like KALI WALLACE will be one of those authors that is going to go a long way, after reading her first novel and I am already craving for her next one. Her writing was beautiful and filled with a lot of emotions, and as a reader it’s not long when you feel the same emotions that Breezy was feeling. Plus there is a lot of mystery surrounding what happened to her, how she got murdered. That was my one question from the start, who killed Breezy and why? Part of me feels that Breezy might had been aware of what happened, but her brain blocked out that memory, till she was ready to remember and after I read it, it made sense why. I wonder that maybe it would been better if she did not remember.

Breezy, was a character you will not forget. Not only was her name awesome, but in general it was fun to read the story through Breezy’s eyes, and it was not long when I saw what Breezy saw and felt what she felt. I can’t even begin to imagine it, waking up in grave with dead man next to it and then come to realization that a year had passed. I can only imagine how scared she must have been, especially since she was not sure what happened to her at first, and why she could sense killers and kill them with her touch. That is a scary thought. I feel that if I had been in her situation, I would not handle it way that she had. I would have freaked out right away. That ending, that was sad, I felt so sad for Breezy when she realized she could never go home to her family again but it felt like she finally accepted it what she was. Dead. There were so much pain, anger and grief there and to die that young? I do not want to even imagine that. Breezy is a character that you can’t help but love.

I love that SHALLOW GRAVES had quite bit of mystery, suspense and action within the book. This was a first book that I read like this, that did not have any sort of romance, but it is also the sort of book that did not need romance. You will find yourself sucked into Breezy’s story, and even when you reach the end, you will be wondering: What happens now? What is going to happen with her now? Those were the thoughts that ran through my mind when I reached the end of the book. It had me craving for me, had me wondering about her. Part of me did not want me reach the ending, because I did not want for story to end. It’s a heartbreaking, beautiful story.
