Maddy Spier has been in love with the boy next door forever. As his figure skating partner she spends time in his arms every day. But she’s also seen his arms around other girls—lots of other girls.

Gabe can't imagine skating with anyone but Maddy, and together they have a real chance at winning some serious gold medals. So, he’s determined to keep thinking of her like a sister. After all, he’s never had a romantic relationship that lasted for more than two weeks.

But when their coach assigns a new romantic skating program, everything changes. Will this be the big break that Maddy’s been hoping for or the big breakup that Gabe has always feared?

I was excited for this book and had high expectations of this novel. Ice Skating partners who also happen be neighbors and best friends who fall in love. How can you not want to read a story like this? When I read the summary, it sounded like a type of book that I was going to love. THE BOY NEXT DOOR turned out not to be what I expected it to be, I liked the book but not way that I thought I would. I thought it was a cute read that captured my attention enough, but not way that some others books had. First was due to fact that the novel started out slow for me, it took me almost half of the book to get into it. Though I got say that once things started picking up, it was hard for me to put it down. THE BOY NEXT DOOR just didn’t have the effect that I thought it would.

I have hate/ love relationship when it came to Gabe & Maddy’s realthionship. There were times where I wondered what Maddy saw in him, how she could possibly love someone like him? Then other times when he did something sweet, showed how much he cared for her which had me smiling. Most of the book I couldn’t figure out if I like them together or not. In beginning, I couldn’t stand Gabe and I hated the way he treated Maddy, well way that he seemed to want keep their relationship a secret. If he really liked her he wouldn’t even do it. I did wonder how long Maddy would go along with it, till she had enough. There were times I did wonder if Gabe actually loved her. By end of the book my opinion of him changed and I could see how much he cared about her.

There was some turn of events that I didn’t see coming. Most of all about Maddy’s father, just like her I was sure that he was having affair. Cancer was last that entered in my mind. I couldn’t believe that her own parents would hide something like that from her. Something that is life threatening. I did enjoy the ice skating version of the story even if I don’t know much about Ice Skating, I used to ice skate for fun when I was younger. I feel like I learned a bit more after reading the book. In general I think it was an interesting enough book that is worth picking up.
