Can you hear Atlantia breathing?

For as long as she can remember, Rio has dreamt of the sand and sky Above—of life beyond her underwater city of Atlantia. But in a single moment, all her plans for the future are thwarted when her twin sister, Bay, makes an unexpected decision, stranding Rio Below. Alone, ripped away from the last person who knew Rio’s true self—and the powerful siren voice she has long hidden—she has nothing left to lose.

Guided by a dangerous and unlikely mentor, Rio formulates a plan that leads to increasingly treacherous questions about her mother’s death, her own destiny, and the complex system constructed to govern the divide between land and sea. Her life and her city depend on Rio to listen to the voices of the past and to speak long-hidden truths.

I love books that deal with mermaids or sirens, one of my favorite genres. When I read summary of the book I was sure that there would be mermaids featured. Who else could leave underwater? I was wrong, mermaids weren’t in this book. Sirens yes but they had nothing to do with mermaids. I have read a decent amount of dystopian novels through years; however most of them seem to have similar ideas. ATLANTIA was different than most of the dystopian books that I had come across, ALLY CONDIE created a completely different world. Come on who wouldn’t want to live under water? The descriptions were filled with so many images in my mind and had me wishing that there was such world, as Atlantia. I was fascinated by Rio’s world and I found myself wondering why she wanted to leave it. ATLANTIA is not a love story but it’s a story about family, friendships, hope and filled with quite bit action and mystery.

I heard about ALLY CONDIE but I haven’t read any of her books till I came across ATLANTIA while I was at library during my break. Now I see why others love and after such amazing book I will be checking her others. Have you ever came across books that was impossible not to love? ATLANTIA was that book for me. When I first picked up I wasn’t sure what to expect and it turned out to be unlike anything I expected, and in a good way. Condie created such magical world and even though I am aware that it’s fiction, to me it felt real. The emotions that Rio went through the book, they were beautifully written and most of them were heartbreaking. I felt her pain and I could see how much she wanted to get above and yet she kept coming across obstacles. All through the book I rooted for her to find her way, to find her way to escape and to find her sister.

RIO & TRUE: I didn’t see it from start but as two of them started to spend time with each other I saw connection between two of them. At first I was sure it was because they both had someone who went above. Rio’s sister and True’s best friend. Like those two were connected, so were True and Rio. As the book progressed so did their relationship, I could tell how much True cared for Rio, otherwise why risk to go above with her if it only put your own life at danger? I was glad that at least Rio had somebody there by her side, besides her aunt who looked out for her. Her mother was gone and then her sister went above, I can’t even begin to imagine how that must felt like. It’s no wonder that she felt abounded. I don’t think she would made it as far as she did, if wasn’t for her family and True. Everybody needs somebody.

ATLANTIA was very family oriented and I loved that about the book. A heartbreaking, beautifully written novel about family, friendship, hope and love. There isn’t a single page that won’t have you craving for more. A page turner.
