Rhiannon Thomas's dazzling debut novel is a spellbinding reimagining of Sleeping Beauty and what happens after happily ever after.

One hundred years after falling asleep, Princess Aurora wakes up to the kiss of a handsome prince and a broken kingdom that has been dreaming of her return. All the books say that she should be living happily ever after. But as Aurora understands all too well, the truth is nothing like the fairy tale.

Her family is long dead. Her "true love" is a kind stranger. And her whole life has been planned out by political foes while she slept.

As Aurora struggles to make sense of her new world, she begins to fear that the curse has left its mark on her, a fiery and dangerous thing that might be as wicked as the witch who once ensnared her. With her wedding day drawing near, Aurora must make the ultimate decision on how to save her kingdom: marry the prince or run.

Retelling of your favorite fairy tale can be either disappointing or magnificent. Sleeping Beauty had always been one of my favorite fairy tales, and there were times that I found myself wonder, what happened after happily ever after. The truth. I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t the only one with that thought in my head. When I came across A Wicked Thing and read that it was about sleeping beauty, after happily after or was it? Right then, from the summary I was hooked to the story. If you love fairy tales, how can you not? Especially once you realized that Aurora’s happily ever after wasn’t that happy after all. Instead it was scary and nothing but a story from the books. I can understand her feeling, if I woke up and saw a stranger kissing me, I would freak out too and find out that your parents are long dead, and you are forced into the marriage. That is a lot to take in, especially when you have been in deep sleep for that long. I don’t know how she put with it as long as she had. To me, Aurora is strong, especially for putting up with her future mother in law, I would lost her patience a long time ago. A Wicked Thing has few characters that you couldn’t help but love.

Have you ever read a book, where every page leaves with some sort of twist? Has you wondering what is going to happen next? A Wicked Thing was that type of story for me. Almost every page had something happened and from time to time had some unexpected twist, which drew you to the story more. I know that all through the story, I was wondering what was going to happen next, what would Aurora choose to do. Would she run, like Finnegan, and Travis both offered to her or would she run? That is one of thoughts I had running through the entire novel. A Wicked Thing was a book that would totally occupy your mind the entire way. There were quite few action in this book, I realized that when it comes to retellings, not always the case. One of things that I loved about this one, it was least unexpected twist to fairy tale, but one I can actually imagine happening. Of course descriptions in the novel were out of this world, so vivid that this fairy tale actually felt real to me. I could picture everything in my mind as I read the novel.

A Wicked Thing didn’t have as much romance, as I thought it would have. Though Aurora did have 3 potential interests or so it seemed. Rodric was the one who kissed her, who she was supposed to marry and I did wonder if he actually cared for her or if he wanted marry her, because that was what he was supposed do. It was impossible to dislike him, I believe that he was one of the nicest guys in story and I could tell that by end of the book that Aurora and him became pretty good friends. He was caring. Honest and even in end he was willing to let her go, how can you not love him. I tried not to like Finnegan but it was hard, especially once he helped Aurora discover what was going on. I believe he really cares for her, though I didn’t really see any real connection between the two of them. Travis was one guy I wasn’t sure about. I was conflicted about him, actually I still am. I am actually curious who Aurora would end up choosing. I can tell that it’s not end of her journey, just way that the book ended. I’m anxious what journey she will go on next and what obstacles she will face on the way.

Despite mixed reviews about the novel. A Wicked Thing was a spectacular debut novel. If you love Fairy Tales, it’s a book that worth giving chance to.
