A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.

When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.

Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.

Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to.

As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?

Kimberly Derting does it again! She’s an amazing writer. Once again she created a story that was action packed and suspenseful that kept me on edge of my seat from the first page till the last. I read Derting other series, The Pledge and loved it and I was excited when I found out about her new series. I love a book that deals with aliens but this unlike any other aliens that I read about, this is about alien abduction, the changes that go through afterwards. These feel like an actual aliens would be like if there was such thing as aliens. There was nothing in The Taking that I didn’t enjoy, it was filled with suspense in every chapter and as novel progressed there was more of it. Not only was it mind blowing but the cover is breath taking. I love how the title is made out of the Fireflies which fit the storyline so well. But reader is not aware of it first and it make any reader curious, why fireflies? I know that I did. It’s type of cover and title that would capture anyone’s attention.

I’m aware fact that Tyler was younger then Kyra was but I loved them, the connection between the two of them. I could tell from moment that Kyra hugged him when she thought he was Austin, there was some sort of attraction between them. I knew for fact that Tyler felt something for her right from start. At first it felt that Kyra was only denying her feelings for Tyler because he’s Austin’s younger brother but I knew they were there. Once he drew drawings for her on sidewalk and how she reacted, and way that she reacted when he was around her. I wished her to just give in. All thorough the novel I was rooting for them. Tyler was one there for her, concerned for her when she got back five years later, not Austin. Way that he looked at her, did those little things for her, he was already in love with her then. That’s why my heart broke for both of them when Tyler got sick. A blood that might kill someone you love? That’s scary. The ending made me wonder though, did he make it? Was he okay now? I could tell by way that Kyra took care of him, how she wanted do anything to save him, she loved him.

The ending was breathtaking, such a cliffhanger too. How can you not and wonder what happens next? I know that I did. I was most curious about her father and Tyler, have they got taken? Were they same as Kyra now? Part of me hopes that they are, it would keep the Tyler and Kyra able to stay together without any complications. Of course at same time he might not be happy with her, for doing this to him. To taking away his normal life. It’s an ending like that , makes the reader eager to pick up the next novel right away. I am. I wished that it would be out already so can see what happens next, what adventures and dangers they are going to have to face next. If you love Fantasy, especially science fiction, The Taking is a both worth checking out.
