Gabry lives a quiet life. As safe a life as is possible in a town trapped between a forest and the ocean, in a world teeming with the dead, who constantly hunger for those still living. She’s content on her side of the Barrier, happy to let her friends dream of the Dark City up the coast while she watches from the top of her lighthouse.

But there are threats the Barrier cannot hold back. Threats like the secrets Gabry’s mother thought she left behind when she escaped from the Sisterhood and the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Like the cult of religious zealots who worship the dead. Like the stranger from the forest who seems to know Gabry.

And suddenly, everything is changing. One reckless moment, and half of Gabry’s generation is dead, the other half imprisoned. Now Gabry only knows one thing: she must face the forest of her mother’s past in order to save herself and the one she loves.

Carrie Ryan did it again, came up with a story that took my breath away. The characters were impossible to not like and the story sucked you in. I didn’t want the book to end, but at the same time I was curious what would happen with everyone. The Dead Tossed Waves is a novel about love, trust, adventure, survival. It has everything in a book that makes it mind blowing, has the reader thinking about it afterwards. I know that the book is fantasy but how it was written, way that Gabry’s thoughts, emotions were expressed made the book real. I read The Forest Of Hands & Teeth couple years ago and loved it. The Dead Tossed Waves is more a companion novel to the first one, it’s about Mary’s daughter, Gabry. I loved this book even more than the first one. There was something about it that had more appeal to me. It could be that it was different, and filled with lots of action. I wished that I picked it up earlier. I’m excited to pick up The Dark & Hallow Places and continue journey with Annah’s story.

I love how Ryan spelled Gabry’s name, it’s unique and not a spelling you would see for Gabrielle. Ryan has a great imagination when it comes to storytelling. Gabry wasn’t strong like her mother Mary had been and she tended to put herself down, a lot. I loved her character, loved following the journey with her through the forest. At beginning I didn’t think that she would make it, she was so afraid of everything. I believe that having both Catcher and Elias helped her, especially Elias. To me it felt like he was the reason that she became stronger and bit more confident of herself by the end of the book. I felt sorry for her, my heart broke for her. Gabry’s story was heartbreaking, from the moment they crossed the barrier, everything seemed to fall apart. I can’t blame for being upset, but she kept on going, she didn’t give up despite everything crumbling in front of her. It takes a lot to go through something like that. I loved that about her. Despite her being scared, she’s strong.

Love triangle here was bit complicated but unlike any I read before. It was hard for me to decide who I liked at first, Elias or Catcher. I knew that both of them cared for Gabry. By end of the novel, I was glad that it was Elias that she ended up with, though it’s not something Annah be happy about, once she finds out. Catcher frustrated me part of the book, of how he treated her. I understand that he was infected but that didn’t give him right to talk way he did sometimes, push her away. Did he really love her or did he just think he did? I know he cared for her, just wasn’t sure it was love. I am curious to find out what it was about him that had him immune to bite but not his sister Cira. Elias, I loved him from the start and I could tell that he cared about Gabry from start. Once I found Annah was her twin, it made me wonder if Gabry was a replacement too but then I saw, she was the one that he loved. How he looked at her, how he always was there when she needed a hand. There was a lot of tension between two of them from start. I was rooting for them to kiss, to admit their feelings all through the book. I hope he comes for her fast, of course will they last when Annah finds out? That’s one question I’m eager for answer.

The Dead Tossed Waves had quite few action scenes, especially with Mudo. You can tell how much time passed since last book, since they call them Mudo. Mary was same as she was in first book, strong, she gone back to Forest to look for her friends. This book is more about survival, trust with bit of romance and of course horror in the mix. If you loved The Forest Of Hands & Teeth, you will love following Gabry’s journey through the Forest.
